This morning Jean-Marc exercised his
VISA card and bought the top-of-the-line 7.1 Dolby amplifier from the
Sony line, as well as a Sony 400-disc DVD/CD/MP3/JPEG player, plus a
new pair of speakers. A downtown A/V dealer is moving to a new
location and is having a sale with some very interesting discounts.
Jean-Marc also bought a very nice CD boom box,
which he gave me as a gift, he gave me a moose sweat shirt, too.
I spent about 10 hours setting up the
system. He already had a 60 inch Sony HDTV LCD projection screen. This
system has about ten times as much computer power than the system that
landed the first man on the moon.

Did some more system set-up and
selected a new powered sub-woofer. The current one would not integrate
into the system.
At 18:00 we went downtown, picked up
Jean-Marc's mamma and went to the Pasta Palace for dinner. Ken had
invited us, as it was his last full day in Whitehorse. He will be
flying back to Edmonton tomorrow, having completed his work on the
construction site.
Afterwards we all went to Zola's Cafe
for the singles mixer.
Jean-Marc was the only one who brought
his Mom, she was a hit with the ladies.

Copied my audio tracks to JM's hard
drive and connected PC audio out to the new A/V system.
Fed 150+ DVDs into the player/changer
which holds 400. Only a few movies got automatically catalogued by the
player, so I started to add data, a tedious process, even with a
keyboard.

Went to the fish ladder again and got
good shots of some huge salmon waiting in the whirlpool below.

Some more cataloguing of DVDs. Added
some necessary SW to JMs PC and cleaned and tuned system.
Every Thursday from now on, there will
be a Farmers Market downtown. Excellent local produce and a large
variety of home-baked goods.
Local artists produce a nice variety of
craft items using local material. Porcupine quills are a preferred
item.

Whitehorse
Real crazy weather pattern today. Rain
and dark clouds on all mountains surrounding Whitehorse, but nary a
sprinkle in the city itself. Only a few sunrays break through the
clouds, but when they do they paint a vivid green on the hillsides.

Fall is here and Winter is just around
the corner.

In preparation for Labor Day weekend,
the streets of Whitehorse are crowded and the stores are mobbed with
shoppers.
Decide to stay till Tuesday to avoid
Labor Day traffic. I hobble like an old man now, must have torn a calf
muscle in my right leg.

Weekend)
Whitehorse
Only plus 2 Celsius at 06:00 this
morning. There is no frost on the pumpkin, but there will be, soon.
Due to my leg still hurting, decided
not to go mushroom hunting with JM. This morning, he took his momma
and Dawn (a lady from the singles group) down to Skagway again.
I am holding the fort. Gives me a
chance to catch up with web work, email, etc.
Jean-Marc did it again, about 50# of
boletus and some other mushrooms filled the trunk of his minivan when
they came back at about 17:00 from Skagway.
I had prepared a bunch of Semmelknödeln
(bread dumplings) and then made a large pot of Schwammerlgemüse
(mushroom stew/gulash) Bavarian style.
A nice bottle or two of Fetzer Riesling
went well with the feast that JMs momma, Dawn, Jean-Marc and I had.

There is really an interesting mix of
people coming to Jean-Marc's place. Yesterday four German people came
to the motel. Two Ladies and two Gentlemen, all four of them staff
from the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg in Sachsen.
They are on a tour of the area and
naturally mostly interested in the geological features. Apart from
cameras, they carry big hammers with them, to collect interesting rock
species.
I had a long and very nice talk with
Professor Dr. Norbert Volkmann, Chair of the Geology of Fossil Fuels
Institute.
In the afternoon Jean-Marc drove us up
a hill not far from the motel and showed his German guests and myself
an overlook of the former copper mining tailings.

Later I shared a bottle of my Yukon
Brewery products with Norbert as we discussed the price of tea in
China.
